Beating the burglars – Potton Windows are better by design!
Family-run Potton Windows is enjoying a double celebration right now! Their 20th year of trading is fast approaching and they have just achieved Secured By Design status for their PVC-U windows. The company, which has about a dozen full-time employees, is the only one in Bedfordshire to hold this accreditation for their windows.
Secured By Design is a UK police initiative which supports the principles of “designing out crime”, by the use of effective crime prevention and security standards.

According to ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) most burglaries are carried out by opportunistic criminals using only basic tools. Their aim is to gain access quickly and quietly, and, if they do not achieve this, they will move on. Whilst many companies might advertise their windows as “high security”, very often these windows contain some components which are of good security quality, but others which are completely untested. For example, what is the point of having the best lock on the market in a poor quality, badly fitted door?
Potton’s Secured By Design windows (certified to BS7950) have been tested as an “entire unit” to show that they will resist this type of opportunistic attack long enough for the vast majority of offenders to give up. Overall, construction materials which have been passed as Secured By Design have been proven to reduce forced-entry burglaries by between 50% and 75%
Peter founded Potton Windows in April 1987. With the help of his wife Dianne, who provides financial and accounts support, and his son Peter Jnr, who is a team leader, the company has gone from strength to strength – always striving to use British made products, employ local people and support local good causes. Peter is proud to say that, even when other companies had to make very tough decisions, Potton Windows has never had to lay off staff, even during times of recession.

They also carry out works in motels, hospitals, schools and sheltered accommodation.
Potton Windows’ managing director Peter Ray says that becoming a certified Secured By Design license holder has definitely been worth all the hard work. “It has taken us three years to achieve this result but, in a time when we’re all concerned about the safety of our property and our possessions, I think it’s a natural and very important progression in our levels of customer service. I’m delighted to be able to offer our clients this extra peace of mind.”
